GM Books: This Will Be My Undoing by Morgan Jerkins

Writing this post now, I cannot remember how I came across this book or who suggested it to me. I want to say I saw it on a book list of must read African American women writers. Nonetheless I am so thankful that I did find it or that it found me. This book chronicles Morgan Jerkins life from childhood to womanhood in a series of essays, stories and even letters (only one addressed to Michelle Obama) in a voice similar to my own, as a black woman living and trying to create in today's society. When I think about this book and what I want to write about it, I think about a meme I have seen and have probably reposted before that says something like 'shout out to all the girls trying to love themselves in a world that is constantly telling them not to'...something like that. I feel like that sentence IS basically this book, it's just the book speaks for black and brown girls specifically. As we are the ones who are constantly made to feel as if our physical attributes are not good enough and our abrasive personalities (by this I mean the angry black woman stereotype) are "too much" for lack of a better term. Not to take away from the bigger picture that Jerkins expresses so well in her book, but if I had to sum it up, that sentence would be the start.

I do not want to give a summary or synopsis of the book because I would do it no justice and I think this is something that deserves a read from everyone, whether you are male or female, black or white, consider yourself a feminist or don't. It is so important to hear stories like that of Jerkins so that we are more aware of the things that other people experience, I think then empathy wouldn't be scarce, especially in times like now when we need it the most. This book made me laugh out loud, it made me sad, it made me proud and it made me think about my own life and the things I have experienced and how they have shaped me. Any book (which should be most in my opinion) that inspires retrospection is worth the read. If I could have you read just one thing that I have suggested here on my blog it would be this one. If you have read it and loved it as much as I did leave a comment, let's talk! (And if you though the book is trash let's talk about that too!)
