How #GIRLBOSS made me work harder

Aug 22, 2017

So I know that everyone and their mother has read #Girlboss by Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso by now, but I just had to make a post about this book. Although her business is now bankrupt, Amoruso is still a great business woman whom we all can learn a lot from. Besides her Nasty Gal store she has turned #Girlboss into a brand all its own. This book basically chronicles Amoruso time as a couch surfing, dumpster diving young adult working at subway all the way to start of her multi million dollar business. She started by opening an E-Bay store and selling things on there. Rather than go through her life story, which I am sure you can find tons of articles about on the internet already, I want to share with you guys my biggest takeaway from #Girlboss and how it made me want  work harder at my job now.

It has taken me some time to figure out what I wanted to pursue as a career and while figuring things out I have had many jobs that I've often felt like was a waste of my time and creativity since it wasn't what I wanted to DO with my life. Through reading #Girlboss, I learned that even if you are at a job you hate, there are always valuable tools there you can be learning that will often translate over to your dream career. In the chapter entitled "Shitty Jobs Saved My Life" Amoruso states that all the "shitty" jobs she had before Nasty Gal taught her that "you have to be willing to tolerate some shit you don't like" and ain't that the truth! No matter where you work even if it's for yourself, there are going to be aspects of your job you just do not enjoy and that's okay. It will make the things you do enjoy that more meaningful. And I promise just from that chapter, I go to work with a more positive attitude and know that even if this isn't the exact field I want to be in, this is my training for that job I know I am meant to have. I know that if I take the time out to learn and manage difficult situations here, then I am better prepared for that dream job in my future.

The Mastery of Love

Don Miguel Ruiz

Welcome back to the Golden Moment book series! The Mastery of Love is a Toltec Wisdom book written by Don Miguel Ruiz (author of the Four Agreements) that explores the beliefs an assumptions that can consume and lead to pain in our relationships. The Toltec are people known in mexico as "woman and men of knowledge" and Ruiz has written a guide to the art of a relationship using their teachings. In this book, Ruiz uses different stories that teach you how to nurture and be happy in the relationships in your life. These teachings are not limited to just the relationship you may have with your significant other but also the relationship with your parents, brother, sisters, friends and whoever else may enter your life.

If you enjoyed The Four Agreements (who hasn't?) then please pick up this book. Ruiz has a way of telling and teaching you things you kind of already know, but through his stories, you find it way more applicable to your own life. Like when he says "...I can tell you that the right woman for you is the woman you love just the way she is,the woman you don't have the need to change at all." I feel like that is something I have always known and we have all been told but that has not stopped me in the past from choosing the wrong partner and desperately trying to mold them into what I wanted them to be. After reading this book, I promise you will have, at the very least, a better understanding of the different relationships in your life.

My New Classic: chloe

Chloe Perfume

Lately I have been really focused on building my collection of perfumes. I think I wear perfume pretty much everyday and I am definitely a girl who likes variety. Every time I step into a Sephora, Ulta, TJ Maxx, even Target, I run to the fragrance section to see if they have anything I may be interested in. On a recent trip to TJ Maxx (I go literally like everyday smh) while browsing their very picked over fragrance section, I found an open box of a Chloe perfume that I did not recognize. The bottle was a completely different silhouette than the Chloe perfumes you would find in Sephora and I loved it. The shape and the color screamed vintage and I could see it sitting and being very cute on my vanity table. After a quick google search and look at some amazon reviews, I discovered this was the Chloe launched and created by Karl Lagerfield in 1975. Since it was already open, I sprayed it on and was not first. I thought it smelled a little too powdery and borderline "old lady" so I left it there and went to the home good section.

Chloe Perfume

After walking around for a bit and catching a whiff of the scent on my arm I went back and grabbed that perfume! Trying a perfume on your actual skin and letting it sit there for a while is a major key when purchasing a new scent. You never know how a fragrance will really smell on you until it mixes with your body chemistry a little. With notes of Jasmine and honeysuckle, I would consider this more of  night time/winter scent but I, of course, have been wearing it during the day in the summer because who cares, right? Once it settles into the skin, the powdery layer disappears and a dark floral scent takes over. It is a definitely a classic scent that gives me sophisticated grown woman vibes and I am in love with it. I feel like this is something my mother would wear (Im sure she probably has worn it) and I am ok with that because my mother has great taste and has set the standard for all things beauty in my life. This is a fragrance I'm sure will be a staple in my perfume collection from here on out and you guys can purchase the perfume here if you're interested!

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

As you guys may know from some of my previous post, I have started and restarted this blog many times over the last few years. It was something Ive always wanted to do and be consistent with but if I am being honest, there were many times throughout this journey where I convinced myself that my writing wasn't good enough, my pictures sucked and any other excuse I could think of to discourage myself from posting content. Then I read Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert and that whole thought process changed. I read tons of self development books that are loaded with information and instructions for life that I may or may not implement once Im done reading them. However, with Big Magic, it was like she was telling me everything I already knew and providing me the smallest tools so I can live my best creative life. I wanted to live by everything she was saying! Even if you don't consider yourself a creative person (which we all are) isn't that what we all want? To live our best life?

In Big Magic, Gilbert explains that in order for you to live the creative life you want, we must all push past the fear that hinders us from following through with things while also not putting too much pressure on your art. She says that quitting your day job and depending on your art to pay the bills (in the beginning, when you've just started creating ) often ends up killing your creativity because now there is too much pressure on your art to provide. Another big take away I got from this book was the notion thats ideas are independent entities looking for a human to nurture them and bring them to life. And if an idea comes to you and let's say you either give up on it or shelf it for too long it will find another human being to bring it to life. All I could think was "WOW" when I read this because its so true. I think everyone has thought of some idea but didn't give it the necessary time and attention so you just forget about it then a few months or years later you see someone on TV or the internet with a similar if not the very same idea you had. And they are making money or traveling the world because of this idea... yea it happens.

There are so many more great take aways from this book and of course I do not want to give everything away. If you are pursuing a creative career, lifestyle or project please pick up this book and give it a read or download the audio version and give it a listen. I promise it will spark something in you that has probably been there all along and hopefully give you the push you need to start living your best creative life.

Current Skincare Routine

Aug 2, 2017

I have been wanting to post a current skincare routine on my blog for some time now and have finally gotten around to it! Even though there may seem to be a lot or products pictured I promise my routine is quite simple as I alternate between some of these products daily depending on how my skin feels. Obviously cleansing is the first step. I am currently using this Daily Pore cleanser by clean and clear, however on most days I used organic black soap to wash my face. After cleansing toning is a must. This clarifying moisture lotion from Clinique is a favorite of mine. When I have time, I opt for one of the two under eye mask pictured (they both can be purchased here). I suffer from puffy eyes and have been trying everything to get rid of them. I will say after about 15 minutes I do see a difference. While my eye mask are doing its thing, I pop on this lip mask from Laneige. This stuff was $13 and worth every penny. You can check out my full review on both eye mask and lip mask here.

collagen jella pack

Once I am done, cleansing, toning and masking, the last step in my routine is to moisturize and use whatever under eye cream/serum I have on hand. I recently purchased this Vitamin C Eye Lift serum from TJ Maxx. To be honest with you guys, I do not see much of a difference when using this product but I am determined to use the whole bottle lol. I absolutely in love with this Collagen Jella pack (full review here) and this Argan + Vitamin E oil I purchased from TJ maxx. I use them together every night and I really think it has done wonders for the texture of my skin. The only thing I do not have pictured that I suggest everyone does at least twice a week is exfoliate. I personally love the St. Ives Apricot scrub for daily use. Please leave a comment and let me know what your favorite skincare products are. As you guys know I love trying new  skincare things!
